Frances Hesselbein
Frances Hesselbein is the President and CEO of the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute. The Institute was originally established in 1990 as the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, but it was renamed in 2012 to honor Frances Hesselbein’s legacy and ongoing contributions. Earlier in her career, she worked for Girl Scouts of the USA, rising from a volunteer troop leader to CEO in 10 years, and then serving in that role for another 14 years. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton in 1998 for her leadership in GSUSA and as a pioneer for women and diversity. President Bush, Sr. appointed Frances to two Presidential Commissions on National and Community Service.
Mrs. Hesselbein served on many nonprofit and corporate boards, including acting as Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the Volunteers of America from 2002 to 2006. She is the recipient of more than 20 honorary doctoral degrees and has authored and co-edited over twenty books, including Hesselbein on Leadership, My Life in Leadership, and More Hesselbein on Leadership. In 2009, the University of Pittsburgh created The Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement in her honor, which aims to produce leaders who will address critical issues and create positive social and economic initiatives around the world.
